If you are looking for style, sophistication and party with the elite of Sydney’s business district on a Friday night, then without question you will want to check out Crystal bar @ the old general post office (or GPO as it is now known).
Crystal bar, located under Martin place is surrounded by the main offices of the Commonwealth Bank, as well as any number of multinational company headquarters. For whatever reason, be it the luxurious yet laid back atmosphere, fantastic decor or the fact it is within stumbling distance, this place simply attracts business men and women looking to wind down after a hard day at the salt mines.
If you are going here and are a male, suits and boots. If you are going here as a female, wear whatever you want as come 10pm or so, you will definitely attract the interest of this rather male dominated crowd.
Despite the suits and ties, the atmosphere is actually extremely jovial (as opposed to pretentious like you might expect).
Evidently the global financial meltdown has impacted the spirits of the bankers, which doesn’t surprise me given the record profits they consistently seem to be making. But economics aside, I was in fact surprised and felt remarkably comfortable in this environment.
In terms of the actual decor, it is remarkably decadent and the fact it is underground definitely contributes to the atmosphere. Once more, the drink service was phenomenally quick given the crowds, and the bar staff extremely polite and courteous despite the fact I seemed to be the only one in the place without a suit on.
Although not a place you would spend the entire night, largely a result of the fact there is no dance floor, Crystal bar at the old GPO is an extremely good place to start your Friday night, particularly if the boss has been riding you like a small Shetland pony.
My advice, drink up till about 11 and head to either Darling Harbour or the Cross, which are fortunately equidistant from the venue.
